Arthurs Pass Viaduct. This recently built engineering marvel was designed to bypass an erosion-prone hillside where the road had been perched for over 100 years. It took over three years to build and is designed to withstand the many earthquakes the area experiences. The viaduct was necessary because the old road at the top of the pass was continually slipping away, to the extent it became impossible to repair.
